Japanese Red Pine prefers a site with full sun and a well-drained, slightly acid soil. Clay soil is usually not suitable unless it is very well drained. Japanese Red Pine lower branches grow nearly horizontal on the trunk making a beautiful silhouette in the landscape it is used best as a specimen, not as a mass planting. Needles are in twos and may turn yellowish during winter on some soils. Pinus densiflora is usually pest free. Native to mid-elevations of Northern Asia. Hardy to lake states and New England. Excellent for its ornamental and understock characteristics.
