If you live in an area that has a birch
borer problem or is too warm a climate then consider the
Japanese white birch.
White Birch also known as Paper Birch and Canoe Birch is the
most ornamental of the Birch. The bark is chalky white and peels off in paper
layers and is very flammable. The Paper Birch grows to 70' in height and has a spread of 40'.
White birch can grow in partial shade to full sun. This Birch is hardy from zone
2 thru 6. Paper Birch is somewhat pyramidal when young and oval when mature. It
is usually grown as a multi-stem tree although single stem Paper Birch are
equally as beautiful. It is a fast growing tree, when given enough water and
fertilizer these birches can nearly double in height yearly when young. The wood
of the white birch is brown, weak, close grained, not durable, soft, used
for spools, wood pulp and fuel. The White Birch leaf is triangular,
long-pointed, irregularly lobed, saw toothed, 2-3" long, dark green in summer
and yellow in the fall. The leaf is narrow oval and serrated. The flowers
are long (1") catkins and the seed is produced in large quantities although seed
litter is minimal. These are transplanted easily in the spring as balled and
burlapped grown trees. Paper Birch is a tree
for northern climates as heat stress is a problem when grown south of Cincinnati
to St. Louis line. It handles moisture well and prefers full sun. White Birch is
susceptible to the Bronze Birch Borer and in some areas it has reduced the population
of birch substantially. The symptoms of the bronze birch borer include dieback
in the upper portions of the tree. The branches take on a lumpy look when
infested with the birch borer. To help avoid the borer plant on rich,
moist soils. Paper Birch is easily propagated by rooted cuttings.
This Birch is a high maintenance tree, but with a little luck you may enjoy many
years with your tree. This is the most common birch of the northern woods.
In some places in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan there are almost pure stands
of white birch. It is almost a dizzying sight to be in one of these stands of
paper birch on a sunny day as the white and dark patterns of the bark present a
wallpaper like effect in the forest. We sell White Birch wholesale and retail.
If you live in an area that has the birch borer present or have a warmer climate
than the paper birch can stand then you may need to grow
Japanese Birch. These
paper birch saplings are native to Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, New York,
Michigan, Wisconsin and the top tiers of states in the US. Much farther south
and they falter from the heat.
