Description

Black willow (Salix nigra) is a medium to large, multiple trunked tree growing in wet areas like swamps, marshes, and along streams and riverbanks. It can grow as tall as 140′ in the right conditions. The bark ranges from dark brown to black and as the tree ages, it develops deep grooves and rough, shaggy scales. The new growth is bright yellow-green in the spring.

Black willow is not recommended for use in a residential garden area as it is quite messy. It also has a root system that will seek out water and septic pipes and potentially cause damage. This tree is very useful for erosion control.
