Description
Blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium or lowbush blueberry) is a low growing, twiggy shrub with glossy leaves. Edible berries are a great treat for humans and wildlife both. Highbush blueberries are commonly found in stores, while lowbush blueberries are smaller and sweeter and often used in making jams. It is important to plant more than one for larger yield. The blooms and fruit occur on old wood.
Lowbush blueberries can be found in all sorts of locations sandy or rocky hills, old fields, and conifer forests. We grew up picking them in the low mountains in Ontario while camping. They make an awesome trail snack and kept us moving when we were little and not that into the views!
