Description

Brandywine maples are a cultivar of red maple, which is native in the eastern United States and Canada.  They hit their mature height within the first twelve years after sprouting, making them a nice fast-growing tree. One of its most notable traits is its beautiful fall color. It has more consistently intense red fall color that gradually turns a reddish-purple. It was developed by the U.S. National Arboretum in 1928 by crossing an ‘October Glory’ and an ‘Autumn Flame’. In 1995 it was made commercially available. Our trees are grown from rooted cuttings and are all male, so there are no messy seeds to clean up.

The Brandywine maple grows to about 25′ tall and is around 12′ wide, so it is a great compact size suitable for most landscapes. It has an elongated oval crown shape and has nice, dense foliage which provides good shade. Leaves on the Brandywine are up to 4 1/2″ long and have 3-5 lobes. The bark is gray and furrowed, with new branches growing out in a brick red color.  Fairly disease resistant, it is an easy maple to maintain and once established it thrives quite well on its own.
