Swamp Chestnut Oak is a medium rate of  growth oak, Similar to a Chestnut Oak except it can occur in wetter soils. The National champion Swamp Chestnut is 200' tall in Fayette County, Alabama. Swamp Chestnut Oak matures with a broad round crown, leaves are 4-8 inches long, shallow lobes, shiny dark green above turning a red or brown in fall. Swamp Chestnut Oak acorns are large and make a mess of the street and walks below the canopy. This oak tree will tolerate a wide range of soils and is an excellent lumber tree and transplants fairly easily if grown in root bags. Swamp Chestnut Oak is moderately drought tolerant though it prefers wetter soils it can do well on dryer sites, prefers sandy loam, and a touch on the acid side. Swamp Chestnut Oak can withstand polluted air, full sun and should be planted more in southern areas as it is a good landscape tree. Swamp Chestnut Oak is native to the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, District of Columbia, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia. Many of the native and non-native where these trees grow have a multitude of tree nursery outlets to choose from as well as many tree farm grown selections.
