Mycorrhisal means "fungus-root" and it is a beneficial fungus for
the root system of trees. There is a wonderful symbiotic
relationship between the plant and the fungus. While the fungus
gains sugars and carbon, the plant in turn receives nutrients and
water. Other benefits include increased pathogen resistance, better
soil conditions, increased success with transplanting, increased
resilience, and a plant that has a higher growth rate. Mycorrizal
fungus is often found in undisturbed soils, but often through site
preparation or past uses of the land the mycorrhizal is no longer
present. Dipping tree and shrub roots prior to planting has
been found to increase the bioavailability of nutrients to the tree
from 10 to 100 times more than without the fungus.
