Habitat:
Grows well in shade, part shade or sun.
Also tolerates a variety of soils; moist, well drained, acidic,
loamy, silty loam, sandy, rich. Native of the south, but
does well in the north too.
Habit:
Grows 10-20 feet high with
an equal spread. Oval shaped. Can be grown as a
large shrub or small tree. Slow to medium grower.
Leaves:
Dark green, smooth compound leaves which will come out early in
the spring.
Flowers:
Beautiful, bright magenta red flowers with prolonged blooming.
The Red Buckeye blooms in the spring and starts blooming at an
early age. Flowers attract hummingbirds.
Fruit:
Smooth round, light brown and about 1" in diameter.
Produces nuts in about ten years.
Winter Buds: Small
resinous and brown.
Bark:
Brown gray bark which can be used as a soap substitute.
Distribution: Grows
naturally in the east from Virginia south. In the northern
states it is cultivated, but still does well.
