Golden Chain Tree - Laburnum anagyroides

Habitat:  Full sun in northern areas and part sun in hotter climates.  Does best in well-drained soil that is organically rich and is somewhat moist.

Habit:  Grown as a small tree or large shrub, this plant makes a great specimen planting.  It can be trained to make a beautiful arbor. 

Leaves:  Alternate leaflets, 1-3" long, with a nice green color. 

Fruit:  Produces 2-3' long seed pods, which are poisonous to both livestock and people.  Some recommend picking and discarding the seed pods to encourage more growth on the tree.

Flowers:  Very dense and showy yellow flowers which grow in 4-10" long racemes.  Very similar to a wisteria flower.

Distribution: Originally from central and southern Europe.
