Habitat: Grows best in full
sun. Soil Condition: Acidic, Alkaline, Clay, Loamy, Neutral, Sandy,
Slightly alkaline, Well drained, Acidic, Alkaline, Slightly alkaline. Tolerates
wetness and can survive moderate drought. Butterfly Bushes can grow successfully in
zone 5 if
you have some snow cover as these are best trimmed back to 1' or less in cold
climates.
Habit: Has an upright and spreading
form. The height and spread vary with each variety.
Leaves: Varies with each type.
Flowers: The Butterfly Bush
produces beautiful, vibrant flower spikes. As the name suggests, these are
loved by butterflies! The bush in front of my house is covered in
butterflies whenever it is in bloom. Great for cut flowers. Colors
vary with variety.
Distribution:
Originally imported from China, this shrub grows well from zones 5-9.
Varieties Offered:
Black Knight: Height 4-6', Spread 4-5'.
Possibly one of the oldest varieties of Butterfly Bush. The Black Knight
has beautiful dark purple blossoms. Flowers on new growth, so it will need
to be cut to the ground each spring.
Nanho Blue: Height 6-8', Spread 5-6'. Grows on
new growth. The flowers are blue-mauve.
