Shumard Oak is native of Eastern USA and is found
naturally in the following states, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia,
Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri,
Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina,
Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia . This Oak has 4-6" leaves with deeply
cut lobes.. It grows to about 70-90'. The record Shumard Oak is in Natchez, Ms
and is 144'. Shumards are pyramidal shaped, similar to a Scarlet Oak at
maturity. Leaves develop a bronze to slightly red color in the fall. Shumard Oaks are an excellent food source for deer, elk, turkeys and
other small animals. Shumard acorns are oval, 1 1/2" long, with a short cap. Hardy
from zone 5-9. It is considered one of the fastest growing Oaks.Shumard are
considered a drought tolerant tree but strangely enough it is found in wetter
soils in some of it's native range. The Shumard Oak is relatively easy to
transplant though for easiest transplanting we recommend planting the seedlings
or small trees in our root bags.
Lower branches on Shumard Oaks need to be shortened then removed early when
planting this as a street or parking lot tree since they will droop toward the
ground as the tree grows older, requiring removal to allow for vehicular
traffic. Leave the more upright, spreading branches to create more clearance
beneath. Lower branches can be left on trees grown in more open areas to allow
for full development of the picturesque, low branching, open form. Multi-trunked
Shumard specimens can reportedly break up at about 25-years-old due to poor
attachment so maintain the central leader. Leaf color runs from dark green in
summer to yellow-brown to red in fall and hang on thru winter.
Prune to maintain a dominant leader by cutting back competing leaders. Do this
every 3 years for the first 15-20 years after planting. We also have: Burr
English Oak, English Oak, Willow Oak, Chestnut Oak, Columnar English Oak, Shumard Oak.
