Scarlet Oak     Quercus coccinea

Zone 4-9

Scarlet Oak is native North American Tree. It is found naturally in the following states:  Alabama, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Vermont, West Virginia. Scarlet Oak has deeply indented lobes though not as deep as Pin Oak which it is closely related. It grows to about 70' but can reach 100' in the woods. Scarlet Oaks are an excellent food source for deer, elk, turkeys and other small animals.  Scarlet Oak grows on sandy, loamy or clay soils on acid soils. Chlorosis often develops on alkaline soils. Although this can be temporarily corrected with applications of appropriate fertilizers containing iron, it is best to choose an oak tolerant of high pH if the soil test indicates a pH above 7.5. Appears to adapt to compacted clay soil. Scarlet Oak has a tap root on loose, well-drained soil and is difficult to transplant; only use nursery grown plants for transplanting, not those collected from the wild. More trees should become available as nursery operators begin using production techniques similar to our root bags. This will make them easier to transplant. Said to exhibit less chlorosis problems than Pin Oak.
Prune to maintain a dominant leader by cutting back competing leaders. Do this every 3 years for the first 15-20 years after planting. Do not allow branches with included bark from growing too large. This is best accomplished by removing some secondary branches (especially those toward the edge of the canopy) from along those branches with included bark in the crotch. Regularly reduce the length of low aggressive branches on Scarlet Oak by making drop crotch cuts if these branches will be in the way later and have to be removed. This will prevent you from having to make large pruning wounds later. We also have: Burr English Oak, English Oak, Willow Oak, Chestnut Oak, Columnar English Oak, Shumard Oak. White Oak, Swamp White OakPin Oak, Northern Red Oak, Heritage Oak, Regal Prince Oak, Rocky Mountain White Oak, Oregon White Oak, Burr gambel Oak, Scarlet Oak, Northern Pin Oak, Bur Oak, Chinkapin Oak.
